About Our Dog Candy

First a little bit about our dog:

Candy is mostly a black lab. Her fur is black with strands of brown intermingled in it and she has a white spot on her chin, throat, breast, belly and 2 1/2 white toes. We got her as a little bit older puppy from the pound in upstate NY. They told us there that she was found together with a couple of brothers and sisters abandoned in a cow barn. We fell in love with her because she was playful and had such a sweet demeanor. Talking of sweet, she also had this sweet cow barn smell to her and when the folks at the pound put her onto the counter so that we could get acquainted, she went right to the candy bars that were laying on the counter to be sold for donations. There was no doubt in our minds now that our new puppy's name would be "Candy". She is a great companion, hunter, guard dog who loves the outdoors and wants to be with us all the time.

Things she's afraid of:

Loud banging noises such as thunder or fireworks scare her and she runs to her "mommy" (me) and cuddles up to her tightly.
Large animals such as horses.
Some human male strangers.

Her interaction with humans:

With female humans she usually rolls over and wants her belly rubbed.
With male humans she usually barks and growls at them at first. Once she settles down a bit she is usually pretty playful with humans. Some male strangers, however, she does not like at all and won't stop barking and growling until he is gone.

Her interaction with other animals:

With other dogs she barks and growls a tiny bit first, but then wants to play and play and play. Her favorite doggy play is the "chase me" game.
She loves her 2 cat companions and I think she sees them as her little babies because she always looks out for them and even "washes" them on occasion. They even share food (when they think I'm not looking) and water. I should note that our cats are strictly indoor cats. Should they "escape" there are no worries because all we have to do is say "Candy, get that kitten". Candy will search for the escaped cat, gently pin it down to the ground until we get there to retrieve it.
